๐Ÿ’กExpert's Take

IB Physics SL receives no course-based transfer credit on Memorial's IB chart (Standard, score "-", "No credit"). For details on the HL pathway and the caveats that apply when opting for HL Physics over SL, see our Memorial Physics HL page.

MUN's IB admissions page notes that SL subjects "may qualify accepted applicants for advanced placement in first year subjects," but the chart row is the only operational source on Physics, and it grants no transfer credit. Compare with SL Chemistry (score 5), which is campus-specific on the same chart: Chemistry 1010 at St. John's, Chemistry 1810 at Grenfell, with the verbatim rule that "students will only receive the credit(s) for the campus they are attending." Physics has no such row at all, on either campus.

If you take a first-year Memorial physics course fresh (PHYS 1020 in the algebra-based stream, or PHYS 1050 in the calculus stream), the calendar lists Science 1807 and Science 1808 as prerequisites. These are not lecture courses but short online lab-safety and WHMIS modules delivered free through Brightspace; the only catch is that they have to clear on your record before the physics course will let you register.

Pick the IB level that prepares you for what your target MUN program actually requires, not just for what the chart awards. Engineering students must take MUN's calculus-based physics (PHYS 1050 + PHYS 1051) per the Engineering One promotion criteria, regardless of IB credit, so HL Physics credit lands on courses Engineering does not require. Life-science and other non-calculus programs do use PHYS 1020 + 1021, so HL credit there reduces real coursework. Either way, IB Physics SL on its own gives you enough Newtonian mechanics to walk into PHYS 1020 or PHYS 1050 ready, even though no MUN credit comes with it. If you are weighing the HL upgrade, the program-fit and credit-restriction nuances live on our Memorial Physics HL page.
