SL English does not satisfy UManitoba's English language proficiency waiver via IB, which specifies Higher Level English at a grade of 4 or higher; most Canadian residents will meet ELP through the 10-year residency or Canadian-curriculum routes instead, and from Fall 2026 a full IB Diploma with at least 24 points (English-medium instruction) also satisfies ELP regardless of HL or SL choice.
On placement, the absence of SL credit does not block later English study: many 2000-level English courses accept ENGL 1200, 1201, 1300, 1301, or ENGL 1400 with ENGL 1340, or written consent of the department head, per the English course descriptions.
