Expert's Insight: McGill technically grants transfer credit for Math: Applications & Interpretation HL—but this credit is highly faculty- and program-dependent. For many degrees, it does not replace real calculus. The Reality by Faculty: → Management (Desautels): Usually evaluated as MATH 122–level credit. Counts toward your quantitative requirements. Useful. → Arts: Usually evaluated as MATH 122–level or general math credit. Counts as an elective or quantitative requirement, but does not lead to advanced math. → Science: Often evaluated as MATH 203 (Statistics) or general math credit, depending on program. ⚠ This does NOT replace MATH 140 (Calculus 1), which many science majors still require. → Engineering: No calculus exemption. You must take MATH 140/141 regardless. Math AI HL is effectively unusable for progression. → Other Faculties (AES, Education, Nursing): Program-specific. Credit may count as statistics, applied math, or elective only. The Critical Question: Does your program require MATH 140 (rigorous calculus), or is applied math/statistics sufficient? MATH 203 and MATH 140 are NOT interchangeable. Reality Check: Never assume this credit "counts" for your major. Ask during registration: "Does Math AI HL satisfy my program's calculus or quantitative requirement?" Verdict: This credit is not universal. → Engineering: ❌ useless → Management / Arts: ✅ mildly useful → Science: ⚠ depends on your major. Do not assume. Verify with your advisor.

Expert's Insight: THE 'BUSINESS CALCULUS' SHORTCUT – AIM FOR A 6 The Policy: SFU rewards high performance in Math AI HL with specific credits tailored for Social Sciences. Scenario A: Score of 6 or 7 (The Business Win) You Get: MATH 157 (3) + STAT 205 (3). The "Golden Ticket": MATH 157 is Calculus I for the Social Sciences.[1] It satisfies the mandatory calculus requirement for Beedie School of Business and Economics majors. The Bonus: STAT 205 gives you 3 units of "Quantitative" credit. Note: This does not replace the core Business Statistics course (BUS 232 or ECON 233), but it counts as a useful elective. Scenario B: Score of 4 or 5 (The Generic Credit) You Get: MATH 1XX (6 units). Condition: Diploma students earn this with a 4+; Certificate/Partial students need a 5+. The Trap: This is generic elective credit. It does NOT satisfy the MATH 157 requirement. You will still have to take Calculus at SFU. ⚠️ Warning for Science/Engineering Majors: Even if you get a 6, MATH 157 is often not accepted for Engineering or Physics majors (who require the harder MATH 151).[2] Reality Check: If you are in Engineering/Science, this credit gives you electives, but you will likely still need to take the "Science Stream" Calculus (MATH 150/151).[2] Verdict: For Business/Econ students, a 6 is a massive win that skips a hard calculus course.[2] For Engineers, it's just elective units.
