💡Expert's Take
Math AI HL maps to SFU's social sciences calculus track — not the STEM one. This matters more than the score itself for some students. According to SFU's official IB transfer credit table, a score of 6 or 7 on Math AI HL earns MATH 157 (3) + STAT 205 (3) — SFU's Calculus I for Social Sciences plus an introductory statistics course. A score of 4 or 5 earns MATH 1XX (6), which is generic math credit. Both award 6 units total.
Math AI HL vs. Math AA HL — they award different SFU courses. The two IB math courses feed into different calculus streams at SFU:
- Math AI HL (score 6+) → MATH 157 + STAT 205 (social sciences calculus + intro statistics)
- Math AA HL (score 6+) → MATH 151 + MATH 152 (STEM calculus I + II)
This distinction reflects the courses' different emphases. Math AI HL focuses on applied and statistical reasoning, which aligns with SFU's social sciences calculus (MATH 157) and introductory statistics (STAT 205). Math AA HL focuses on pure calculus, which aligns with SFU's STEM calculus sequence (MATH 151/152). The amount of credit is the same (6 units), but the specific courses — and therefore the prerequisites they unlock — are different.
What MATH 157 and STAT 205 are. MATH 157 is Calculus I for the Social Sciences — it covers limits, derivatives, exponential and logarithmic functions, and optimization with applications to business and economics. STAT 205 is an introductory statistics course covering data collection, frequency distributions, parameter estimation, and hypothesis testing, designed to be accessible to non-specialists. Both are Q-designated (Quantitative).
What to watch for:
- MATH 157 credit blocks MATH 151 — and that affects Science and Engineering students. SFU's first-year calculus courses are mutually exclusive: holding credit for MATH 157 means you cannot take MATH 151 (or MATH 150 or MATH 154) for further credit. This is fine if you are headed for Business, Arts, or Social Sciences — MATH 157 satisfies their calculus requirements. But if you plan to pursue Science, Engineering, or Computing Science, those programs typically require MATH 151 (the STEM calculus), and your MATH 157 credit blocks you from taking it. If this applies to you, contact SFU Admissions about removing the IB transfer credit before enrolling in any equivalent course, so you can take MATH 151 instead.
- STAT 205 does not satisfy the Beedie statistics requirement. The Beedie BBA program requires BUS 232, ECON 233, or STAT 270 for its statistics requirement — not STAT 205. So while MATH 157 checks the Beedie calculus box, the STAT 205 from your IB credit does not check the Beedie statistics box. You will still need to take BUS 232 (or an accepted equivalent) separately.
- STAT 205 has its own course exclusions. According to the SFU Calendar, you cannot obtain credit for STAT 205 if you already hold credit for STAT 101, 201, 203, 285, or any upper-division STAT course. Conversely, holding STAT 205 from IB transfer credit blocks you from taking those other introductory statistics courses. This is unlikely to cause problems since STAT 205 serves the same introductory purpose, but be aware of it if your program requires a specific alternative intro stats course.
- Generic MATH 1XX (score 4–5) does not satisfy named prerequisites. If your program requires "MATH 157" or "MATH 151 or equivalent," generic MATH 1XX credit will not suffice. You would need to take the specific course at SFU. However, MATH 1XX does not create course exclusions — it will not block you from enrolling in any specific math course, which is actually an advantage over the score-6+ credit in certain edge cases.
- WQB designations. Per SFU's WQB transfer credit policy, IB transfer credit may be eligible for Q (Quantitative) and B (Breadth) designations but not W (Writing). Both MATH 157 and STAT 205 are Q-designated courses at SFU. If the Q tag does not appear on your transfer credit record, you can submit a WQB designation review request to SFU's UCIL Office.
For Beedie-bound students: A score of 6+ on Math AI HL gives you MATH 157 — one of the four accepted calculus courses for the BBA. That is a genuine advantage. But do not assume the STAT 205 portion covers your statistics requirement — it does not. Plan to take BUS 232 or an accepted equivalent at SFU. The STAT 205 credit still counts toward your 120-unit degree total and satisfies Q-designation requirements.
For Science or Engineering students: Be careful. Math AI HL with a score of 6+ creates a course exclusion problem — you get MATH 157 credit, which blocks MATH 151. If your program requires the STEM calculus sequence, you should contact SFU Admissions about removing the MATH 157 transfer credit before enrolling so that you can take MATH 151 instead. Alternatively, if you score 4 or 5, the generic MATH 1XX credit does not block any specific course, meaning you can still enroll in MATH 151 — an ironic situation where the lower score creates fewer planning complications for STEM-track students.
The score-6 threshold. As with Math AA HL, the jump from 5 to 6 is where the credit changes from generic to specific. For students heading into Business, Economics, or Arts, pushing to a 6 earns you named courses (MATH 157 + STAT 205) that satisfy real prerequisites and free up space in your first-year schedule. For STEM-track students, the calculation is more nuanced — read the course exclusion note above before deciding whether the specific credit is an advantage or a complication.
Official award line (Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation — HL):
Minimum score: 4 (IB Diploma) / 5 (IB Certificate/Partial)
Credit granted (score 4–5): MATH 1XX (6) — generic math credit
Credit granted (score 6–7): MATH 157 (3) + STAT 205 (3) — Calculus I for Social Sciences + Introduction to Statistics
SFU Undergraduate Admission — International Baccalaureate transfer credit table
What about Standard Level (SL)? IB Diploma holders are also awarded three units of general credit for transferable SL courses — for example, Mathematics AI SL = MATH 1XX (3). SL credit is not available to IB Certificate students. See the full IB transfer credit table for details.
