💡Expert's Take

IB Math: Applications and Interpretation HL is not on UM's approved equivalency list. The subject does not appear in UM's AP and IB approved courses for credit (August 2024 version), which carries the legacy Mathematics rows and the Analysis and Approaches route only. UM's Transfer Credit Resource (Last Update: February 2026) is the live source for active evaluations and should be re-checked before any application or registration decision. AI HL is still recognized for admission math at several competitive direct-entry faculties; it just adds no credit hours.

IB Math Analysis and Approaches HL appears on the same chart with 6 credit hours (MATH 1500 Introduction to Calculus plus MATH 1700 Calculus 2), so the gap is AI-specific, not an HL versus SL question. UM also notes the chart is "reviewed on a regular basis and subject to change".

What to watch for:

  • Admission versus credit. UM's IB admission tables list "Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (HL or SL) or Applications and Interpretation (HL)" as the math prerequisite for Commerce, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, and Physical Geography. AI HL clears the admissions bar for those programs; for U1, Arts, Science, and similar streams the math line reads simply "Mathematics," so AI SL is generally acceptable for admission as well.
  • Commerce (Asper). BComm Honours program pages name MATH 1524 as the preferred calculus; students who take MATH 1230, MATH 1500, or MATH 1510 in its place must complete one of MATH 1300, MATH 1310, MATH 1210, or MATH 1220 as a non-business elective.
  • Engineering. The Preliminary Engineering Program states students are "strongly advised to complete MATH 1510 and MATH 1710," with MATH 1500 or MATH 1230 acceptable only "in lieu of" MATH 1510 (and MATH 1524 explicitly not equivalent). Note that MATH 1510 has a Physics 40S prerequisite; applicants without senior physics will need a bridging course or should start with MATH 1500.
  • SL note. AI SL is also absent from the IB credit chart, and is not on the AA/AI HL math list used by Commerce, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, and Physical Geography for admissions.

UM treats IB credit as opt-in: "Acceptance of these credits is not compulsory; you must indicate your intention to claim credit by completing a Request for University Credit for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Results form", and the form itself states "Only credit specifically requested below will be awarded". Students should still submit the form to claim any other IB credits they want; AI HL simply will not appear among the approved awards. If UM updates its approved list later, re-check the Transfer Credit Resource before assuming current status.

Official award line (Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL):
Minimum score: N/A (subject not on UM's approved equivalency list as of August 2024)
Credit granted: None
