π‘Expert's Take
UManitoba's chart lists this subject as 'MATHEMATICS ANALYSES & APPROACHES (higher)' (Math AA HL). A score of 4 or higher is eligible for MATH 1500 Introduction to Calculus (3) and MATH 1700 Calculus 2 (3) per the AP and IB courses approved for credit consideration chart. The chart adds that awards are 'reviewed on a regular basis and are subject to change', that students should 'consult with their faculty/school of interest regarding credit use', and that 'there is no maximum number of allowable AP or IB credits.'
Match the chart row to your IB transcript exactly. The chart also has a separate 'MATHEMATICS (higher)' row (MATH 1500 OR MATH 1510, 3 cr) that is not this subject; the six-credit award applies only when your IB transcript reads 'Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches' at HL.
Where the converted grade lives is also non-obvious. UManitoba's Transference of External Grades Policy states that 'only courses and grades completed at the University of Manitoba... will be displayed on the Official Transcript', and that 'transfer credit information on the Official Transcript will display the source of transfer credit and the hours applied'. The IB-to-letter conversion (4=B, 5=B+, 6=A, 7=A+, per the same AP/IB chart) is recorded in the Student Information System for academic assessment, prerequisite checking, and program admissions.
What to watch for:
- Medicine AGPA, specifically. The Max Rady College of Medicine Bulletin states: 'IB and AP courses will be included in the calculation of the AGPA if the applicant submits the official IB and AP transcripts by the transcript deadline... Applicants whose IB and AP course credits do not appear on a University of Manitoba transcript but wish to have them considered must contact the Admissions Office in writing.' The same bulletin states the AGPA 'will include the initial and all subsequent grades from courses that may have been repeated.' Other UManitoba programs that use admission averages do not publish parallel IB-inclusion language, so check each program's bulletin separately rather than assume the Medicine rule generalizes.
- Course-level blocking is concrete; program-level fit is separate. Per the catalogue, MATH 1500 'may not be held with' MATH 1230, MATH 1501, MATH 1510, MATH 1524, MATH 1525, or the former MATH 1520; MATH 1700 'may not be held with' MATH 1232, MATH 1701, or MATH 1710. Once the IB credit is awarded, none of those parallel courses can be registered for additional credit. Whether the IB-awarded course satisfies a specifically named program requirement (for example MATH 1710 in an Engineering plan) is a program-level question to verify in the relevant requirement sheet.
UManitoba is explicit that 'Acceptance of these credits is not compulsory; you must indicate your intention to claim credit by completing a Request for University Credit for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Results form' (see Transfer credit information). Skipping the form prevents the credit award, but the Med Bulletin's written-request pathway means it is not, by itself, an AGPA shield for Medicine applicants. Math AA SL is also on the chart but earns MATH 1500 plus a generic 'MATH 1XXX TRANSFER 1000 LVL' credit; UManitoba treats unallocated credit as something that 'typically cannot be used in lieu of UM course offerings to fulfill specific prerequisite and program requirements without individual approval', so only the HL award names MATH 1700 directly.
Official award line: 'MATHEMATICS ANALYSES & APPROACHES (higher)' · minimum score 4 · MATH 1500 INTRO CALCULUS (3) & MATH 1700 CALCULUS 2 (3). Subject to change; consult your faculty for credit use.
