π‘Expert's Take
IB Math AA HL earns 1.0 Western credit, made up of two 0.5-credit courses, Calculus 1000A and Mathematics 1229B, but the Math 1229B half is antirequisite to Mathematics 1600A/B, the first-year linear algebra course required by most upper-level modules in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, and Economics. Accepting the 1229B credit means you cannot also take 1600A/B for credit. This is the tension the credit description does not surface.
Calculus 1000A is the standard first-year calculus entry point and is fully interchangeable with Calculus 1500A as a prerequisite for higher-level calculus courses. Mathematics 1229B (Methods of Matrix Algebra) is more limited: the Department of Mathematics states that Methods courses “do not fulfill the prerequisites for any second year mathematics course” and do not satisfy the minimum entrance requirements for most Science or Economics modules.
What to watch for:
- If your intended module (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Actuarial Science, or Economics Honours) lists Math 1600A/B as required, decide before courses begin whether to keep the 1229B credit or forfeit it and take 1600A/B. Whether the paired award can be split, keeping Calculus 1000A while forfeiting only Math 1229B, is not confirmed on any public Western page; confirm with the Registrar or your faculty’s academic counselling office before deciding.
- Computer Science: the CS module math requirement accepts Calculus 1000A/B, Applied Math 1201A/B, Calculus 1301A/B, Math 1600A/B, Calculus 1500A/B, and Calculus 1501A/B. Math 1229B is not on that list, so only the Calculus 1000A half of this award counts toward the CS requirement.
- The Department of Mathematics highly recommends Calculus 1500A for students pursuing a Major or Honours Specialization in Mathematics; students on that path may prefer to forfeit the Calculus 1000A credit and take 1500A for more rigorous preparation.
- Transfer credit requires the full IB Diploma. Western’s pages currently show different minimum totals: 27 on the general IB page, 28 on the Ontario high school page; confirm the threshold for your applicant type with the Registrar.
Accept both credits if your program accepts Math 1229B and does not require Math 1600A/B; some BMOS/Management, Biology, and Social Science pathways qualify. If your module requires Math 1600A/B, get advising before accepting: the right course sequence matters more than the credit count.
