Does University of Windsor give transfer credit for IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL?
Windsor, ON
Yes, Transfer Credit Available!
Minimum Grade Required
Credit Granted
MATH-1720 + MATH-1xxx (Differential Calculus + 1st Year Math Course)
Generic Credit: Unassigned credit, not a specific course. How it applies to your degree is determined by your faculty, and it may not replace a mandatory prerequisite for your major.
π‘Expert's Take
The two halves of this award are not equal. The official IB equivalency table grants a named course, MATH-1720 (Differential Calculus), plus one unspecified MATH-1xxx credit. The named course carries real differential-calculus content (limits, derivatives, the Mean Value Theorem, l'Hopital's Rule, antiderivatives); the MATH-1xxx half is filler credit with no fixed content.
That split decides what you can build on. The MATH-1720 portion clears the differential-calculus prerequisite for MATH-1730 Integral Calculus, whose prerequisite is "MATH-1760 or MATH-1720." The unspecified MATH-1xxx credit is applied to other or elective requirements on your Academic Advising Report, and depending on your degree, not all transfer credit granted will align with your program requirements.
Three things to check:
- Antirequisite. MATH-1720 and MATH-1760 (Functions and Differential Calculus) are antirequisites, so credit for one rules out credit for the other. If a program plan lists MATH-1760, the IB-awarded MATH-1720 already covers it.
- You cannot opt out. Windsor states you cannot decline transfer credit, though you may repeat a credited course and have your earned grade count in its place. That matters if you would rather take MATH-1720 fresh for grounding or GPA.
- It is not automatic. An official final IB transcript must be sent by the IB to the Office of the Registrar before the credit is assessed.
Read the award narrowly. MATH-1720 may satisfy a listed MATH-1720 or MATH-1760 requirement or prerequisite, but degree-requirement fit still needs to be confirmed on your Academic Advising Report. Analysis and Approaches SL earns only the unspecified MATH-1xxx credit (no MATH-1720); see its dedicated SL page on this site.
