πŸ’‘Expert's Take

This is named-course credit, the strong kind. A 6 or 7 earns MATH_V 100 and MATH_V 101 themselves as advance credit, not unassigned first-year math, covering the standard differential and integral calculus sequence. In Commerce, MATH_V 100 is the required first-year math course, and MATH_V 101 is also needed if you plan an Economics or Computer Science specialization; Science calculus requirements depend on your specialization.

Engineering is the exception. The faculty recommends completing the first-year Math and Physics courses at UBC even if you hold advanced credit, and if you hold a Guaranteed Placement offer, keeping it requires completing at least 30 credits at UBC during your first Winter Session, and your IB credits do not count toward that 30, so skipping MATH_V 100 and 101 means taking other UBC courses in their place. Check with Engineering Academic Services before planning around these credits.

You do not have to accept it: UBC states you may refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway. In Science, be aware that taking the equivalent UBC course itself constitutes refusing the advance credit, and if you do not pass, you will need to retake the course at UBC rather than fall back on the IB award. Science also counts advance credit toward degree totals and promotion but not toward your first-year Winter Session course load, which matters for anything load-dependent. UBC Math's general advice on first-year calculus credit (framed for AP and Challenge Exam credit) notes some students still take first-term calculus to firm up fundamentals.

Official award line (Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL):
Minimum score: 6
Credit granted: MATH_V 100 (3) and MATH_V 101 (3)
Analysis and Approaches SL: no credit.
