Does University of British Columbia accept Chemistry HL?

If you score a 6 or 7 in IB Chemistry HL, UBC Vancouver grants you CHEM_V 121 (4 credits). That's a real head start because CHEM_V 121 is a core first-year course that includes a heavy 3-hour weekly lab component: CHEM_V 121: Structure and Bonding in Chemistry.

The Reality Check (The "CHEM 123 Gatekeeper")

• Your IB Chemistry HL credit does NOT automatically cover CHEM 123. Unlike Biology (which grants 8 credits), Chemistry HL only grants 4. You still must take the other half of UBC's standard first-year sequence: CHEM_V 123 (4 credits).

Strategic Advice

1) Life Sciences / Biochem / Pre-Med Majors

• Take the CHEM 121 credit. It reduces your first-term load and frees you from a 3-hour weekly wet lab.
• Register for CHEM 123 in Term 2. You must take this to unlock your second-year Organic Chemistry (CHEM 203) and Biochemistry (BIOC 202) requirements.

2) Engineering (BASc)

• Use the CHEM 154 exemption strategically. CHEM 154 is a notorious workload-heavy course. Skipping it allows you to focus on your difficult Math and Physics sequences.
• Important planning detail: The CHEM 154 exemption generally does not equal CHEM 121 + 123. If you decide to switch out of Engineering and into a Science program later, you may have to go back and take the standard CHEM sequence.

3) Non-Chem Majors (Comp Sci, Arts, Math)

• Take the credit and walk away. CHEM 121 is a legitimate 4-credit science course. If your program just needs "Science Breadth" and doesn't require CHEM 123 later, you never need to step foot in a chemistry lab again.
