Does University of Toronto give transfer credit for IB Chemistry HL?

What to watch for:

• UTSG students: this credit does not open any prerequisite doors under the current policy. For the Sept 2025 admission cohort, Chemistry HL at UTSG awards breadth credit only. If your program requires CHM135H1 (and subsequently CHM136H1 or CHM151Y1), you will need to enrol in those courses regardless of your IB result. It is worth contacting the Faculty Registrar at UTSG to confirm whether departmental recognition of your IB background is available for enrolment purposes.
• The first-year chemistry sequence at UTSG has two common paths. The Department of Chemistry recommends CHM135H1 + CHM136H1 for Life and Health Sciences programs (CHM135H1 is a prerequisite for CHM136H1, and CHM136H1 is not offered in Fall). For Chemistry Specialist and Major programs, CHM151Y1 is strongly recommended. Your IB credit at UTSG does not replace either path — it adds a breadth credit alongside them.
• UTM students get the strongest outcome. Both CHM110H5 and CHM120H5 equivalencies carry full Yes/Yes/Yes access, meaning the transfer credit can satisfy program admission criteria and unlock prerequisite chains for upper-year Chemistry courses at UTM. If you are deciding between campuses and Chemistry is central to your program, this difference matters.
• UTSC’s split: only CHMA10H3 counts for prerequisites. The second UTSC half-credit (no named equivalent, access = No) cannot independently satisfy any prerequisite. It contributes to your breadth requirement and degree unit total only. Students at UTSC should confirm program requirements against CHMA10H3 specifically.
• The 3.0 transfer credit cap. Effective September 2025, UTSG and UTM each impose a maximum of 3.0 transfer credits across all secondary school curricula combined. Chemistry HL uses 1.0 of that allocation. Students holding multiple HL credits should plan which subjects to submit carefully. UTSC applies the same 3.0-credit cap.
• Submission deadlines vary by campus. At UTM and UTSC, IB results must reach University Admissions directly from the IBO by July 31, 2026 for Fall 2026 entry. UTSG operates on a processing timeline rather than a single hard cutoff: results submitted by end of July are added to your record by end of August; submissions after that are processed on a rolling basis. At all campuses, results issued by your school (rather than the IBO directly) are not accepted.
