π‘Expert's Take
French B HL with a 4 earns 6 credit hours at Memorial (FREN 1501 + FREN 1502 under the 2025-2026 IB transfer credit chart). Standard Level with a 4 also earns credit (FREN 1500 + 1501) on the same chart, so SL is not "no credit" at MUN.
The non-obvious point is placement, not the credit. Even though the IB chart awards intro-level courses (FREN 1501 + FREN 1502), the St. John's French criteria chart lists "Students who have completed IB French" as an entry pathway to FREN 2100 (Intermediate French I), alongside high-grade French immersion and AP 4 or 5. Note, however, that FREN 2100's published prerequisite is "FREN 1502 with a grade of at least 60%", and IB transfer credit is recorded without a grade per University Regulation 4.4. Strong-background students are directed to contact the department for permission to register, so do not assume the registration system will admit you to FREN 2100 automatically.
What to watch for:
- Native or near-native French speakers are normally not granted credit for first-year French in their native language (see Regulation 15.13.2); placement is set in consultation with the Department.
- Students aiming at a French Major, Minor, or Honours face a hard cap of no more than 6 credit hours at the 1000 level in each program, plus a 6-transfer-credit-hour cap on the Minor specifically. The IB award fills, rather than extends, that allowance.
- A departmental placement test may be required; per 15.13.2.6 Transfer Credit for French Courses, the result can influence the number and level of transfer credits awarded.
- Credit is only granted once an official transcript is sent directly from the International Baccalaureate Organization; predicted scores and school-issued documents do not qualify.
If you want a different placement (for example, retaking FREN 1501 or 1502 to improve standing): per the French regulations preamble, returning to a previously completed course to improve standing is permitted only with the permission of the Head of the Department. MUN's published transfer-credit pages do not list a self-serve form to decline IB course-based credit, so the practical route is split by question type, as the Registrar's transfer-credits page directs: process and status to transfer.credit@mun.ca, and program applicability to your academic advisor or advice@mun.ca. For St. John's higher-level French placement, the published contact is the Manager of Academic Programs at mllcprograms@mun.ca; Grenfell students are routed to the program chair via the Grenfell section of the French criteria chart.
Official award line (IB French B, Higher Level):
Minimum score: 4
Credit granted (St. John's and Grenfell campuses): FREN 1501 + FREN 1502 (6 credit hours)
