Does University of Calgary give transfer credit for IB French A: Language and Literature HL?

What to watch for:

• Francophone and French immersion students must consult the department before registering. UCalgary's French department has a formal placement policy and explicitly notes that native speakers or students with strong French backgrounds must contact the department to be placed in an appropriate course. An IB transfer credit covers your formal requirement, but the department can and does redirect students whose competency level has moved beyond the credited course. If French is your first language, or you grew up in an immersion environment, do not assume FREN 227 is the right starting point; speak to a program advisor first.
• Engineering students: FREN 227 qualifies as complementary studies. UCalgary's Engineering Complementary Studies policy (calendar entry) lists all French 200- to 500-level courses as eligible electives. FREN 227 falls squarely within that range, making this credit count structurally in an Engineering degree, not just as a free elective.
• Minor in French: FREN 227 counts toward the sequence but not toward the senior requirement. The French Minor requires a minimum of 6 half-course equivalents at the 300-level or above. FREN 227 is a 200-level course and does not itself count toward that senior requirement, but it satisfies the prerequisite for FREN 339, which does, keeping you on track to complete the minor.
