π‘Expert's Take
At UNB Fredericton, IB French A: Language and Literature HL at a 5 or higher posts as FR 2124 (Aspects of the Francophone World) and FR 2154 (French Reading and Writing), 6 credit hours in total, per UNB's Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate transfer-credit table. These are named 2000-level intermediate courses (first digit 2 in UNB's numbering), not unspecified junior credit. The equivalency is published for the Fredericton campus only; the table lists no entry in the Saint John column. Credit is posted after your official IB results are sent to UNB directly from the IBO, so treat it as eligible rather than guaranteed until it appears on your record.
Three things to watch:
- Once FR 2124 and FR 2154 are posted, much of the lower French sequence is no longer open to you for credit. FR 1184, FR 1194, FR 2034 and FR 2054 each carry an official note that they may not be taken for credit by students who have successfully completed FR 2124 or FR 2154, and the basic-French courses are closed once any Department of French course is on your record.
- The credit does not place you automatically. Before registering for any French course at UNB for the first time, you must consult the Department of French, which states it "cannot guarantee a place in a course until this consultation has taken place" and reserves the right to remove un-consulted students from class and wait lists.
- If you are considering a French major, honours, or minor, note that FR 2124 and FR 2154 are intermediate, not upper level (upper level is first digit 3 or 4), so they do not count toward the 12 upper-level credit hours a French minor requires or the upper-level totals in the major and honours programs. Confirm with the Department how this transfer credit counts before building a French credential around it.
UNB's IB table grants transfer credit at Higher Level only, so the Standard Level version of this subject earns no UNB credit.
Official award line (French A: Language and Literature HL):
Minimum score: 5 (table lists "5, 6 or 7")
Credit granted: FR 2124 and FR 2154, 6 credit hours total (Fredericton campus; Saint John not listed)
