πŸ’‘Expert's Take

Named-course credit at the 400 level. A 5 or higher earns FREN_V 401 and FREN_V 402, Upper-Intermediate French: two specific courses, not unassigned credit.

Both courses are UBC's CEFR B2-level sequence, so the award completes B2 training rather than placing you beyond it; further French courses have their own prerequisites. The two courses are also named upper-level requirements in the French Language, Literatures and Cultures major, honours, and minor, so there this is direct program progress, not just electives. One caution: the separate Minor in French Language is not available to students whose entry point is FREN_V 401 or higher; advanced entrants are pointed to the FLLC minor instead. If you plan to take any further FREN course, FHIS requires every student to complete its French placement procedure first; students identified as overqualified who skip it can be removed from the course without credit, with a possible W and fees.

What the 6 credits do depends on your faculty. Applied Science applies only 3 of the 6 toward the BASc, since a maximum of 3 credits of language courses can count toward its humanities requirement. In Science, FREN_V courses are Faculty of Arts credits and can count toward the BSc's 12-credit Arts Requirement. UBC advises that students eligible for first-year credit consult an academic advisor before registering for second-year courses, and states you may choose to refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway. At SL, this subject earns FREN_V 301 and FREN_V 302; see our French A: Language and Literature SL page.
