πŸ’‘Expert's Take

Split credit: one named literature course plus one unassigned. A 5 or higher earns FREN_V 311, Introduction to Literature in French (critical reading of French prose, non-fiction, poetry, and theatre), plus FREN_V 3rd-year level (3) as general credit; under UBC's transfer credit terms, the unassigned half counts toward credit totals but is not a guaranteed substitute for a required course code.

The named half is the real asset. FREN_V 311 is the formal prerequisite for most of UBC's 400-level French literature and culture courses, though many of those also recommend FREN_V 402-level language preparation. It is also a named requirement in the French Language, Literatures and Cultures major and honours and in the Minor in French Language, and one of two options in the FLLC minor. Note this is literature credit, not language-sequence placement: if you plan to take FREN language courses, FHIS requires every student to complete its French placement procedure first; students identified as overqualified who skip it can be removed from the course without credit, with a possible W and fees.

Faculty treatment differs. Applied Science applies all 6 credits to the BASc as Humanities and Social Science electives. In Science, FREN_V courses are Faculty of Arts credits and can count toward the BSc's 12-credit Arts Requirement. UBC advises that students eligible for first-year credit consult an academic advisor before registering for second-year courses, and states you may choose to refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway; in practice that choice applies to the named FREN_V 311, since the unassigned 3 credits correspond to no specific course. At SL, this subject earns FREN_V 301 and FREN_V 302; see our French A: Literature SL page.
