The part students miss is the ceiling: total IB transfer credit is capped by faculty and program, running from as little as 1.0 unit in some programs to 4.0 for a full Diploma in others. If you are claiming several eligible HL credits, a low ceiling can fill before this elective adds anything, so check your program's limit rather than assuming every accepted subject lands.
If you are thinking of carrying on with French, treat FR 1XX as an elective placeholder, not a step into the French course sequence. It is not one of the department's enrollable FR courses, and it does not cover any of the three required courses in the French Minor, so it will not by itself advance a French major or minor.
Two things to watch:
- Architecture is the one exception inside the Faculty of Engineering: it will consider up to 0.5 units of elective credit, while the other Engineering programs, including Software Engineering, grant no first-year IB credit.
- If you later move into a program in a different faculty, the credit can change, and a faculty admissions committee reserves the right to refuse it.
