💡Expert's Take

UManitoba's official AP/IB approved-courses chart recognises IB "French A or B (higher or standard)" with FREN 1200: French 1 (6 credit hours) at a minimum score of 4. The chart awards the same credit at both higher and standard levels and does not separate French A from French B, so a Literature HL exam is mapped to the same first-year French course as a French B SL exam.

IB scores post to the UM transcript as letter grades per the chart legend (4 = B, 5 = B+, 6 = A, 7 = A+), so the 6 credits read on your CGPA like a graded course. The Faculty of Education, however, explicitly excludes IB transfer credit from its admission average: "International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) that have been awarded as transfer of credit may be used within the teachable courses but excluded from the AGPA calculation" (Bachelor of Education Applicant Information). If Education is your target, the IB letter grade neither lifts nor weighs down the competitive AGPA, though the same credit may still count toward a teachable-subject requirement.

What to watch for:

  • FREN 1200 is a retired code. The current FREN listings describe it as "the former FREN 1200" and split the live first-year sequence across FREN 1152/1154 (introductory), FREN 1192/1194 (bilingual or francophone), and FREN 1202/1204 (intermediate).
  • FREN 1152 and FREN 1154 carry a registration block: they are "not open to students who have previously obtained credit in … the former FREN 1200." Low stakes in practice, since those intro courses are themselves "Not for credit in French Major or Minor."
  • FREN 1192, 1194, 1202, and 1204 are flagged "may not be held with … the former FREN 1200" and as mutually exclusive. The published wording addresses credit duplication rather than enrolment, and the Repeated Course Policy then takes over: only the highest grade counts toward the degree, while grades from all attempts at equivalent courses are used in your CGPA.
  • For the published French Major and Minor entry, the Year 1 grid lists only FREN 1192/1194 or FREN 1202/1204; the calendar does not list FREN 1200 as a substitute, so the IB credit does not on its own satisfy the documented concentration entry.

Most 2000-level FREN courses do list "the former FREN 1200" as a qualifying prerequisite, so a student who claims the IB credit can usually step into upper-year French; the visible exception is the oral-skills track, where FREN 2610 requires FREN 1252 or the former FREN 1250 instead. Whether FREN 1200 will be allowed to fill the Year 1 block for the Major or Minor is not addressed in the published grid and is the right question to put in writing to the Department of French, Spanish and Italian. If the awarded credit is not the right fit, UManitoba treats AP/IB credit as opt-in: "Acceptance of these credits is not compulsory; you must indicate your intention to claim credit by completing a Request for University Credit for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Results form." Either way, release your official IB results to UManitoba first; the office warns that results arriving late will not be assessed in time for initial course registration.

Official chart entry: column 1 reads "FRENCH A or B (higher or standard)," column 2 reads "FREN 1200: FRENCH 1 (6)," under the IB section heading "MINIMUM GRADE OF 4" (University of Manitoba, AP and IB Approved Courses for Credit).
