💡Expert's Take
IB French B SL earns no transfer credit at uOttawa. uOttawa's IB transfer credit table covers HL courses only; SL is categorically excluded. French B HL does earn credit — but with a significant restriction that eliminates it for a large share of students who take this course.
French B HL at a score of 5 or higher earns 6 units of unspecified first-year French-as-a-second-language credit (FLS 1XXX). However, uOttawa's own table states explicitly: you cannot receive these units if you are enrolled in a program offered in French. Students in French-language or bilingual programs — a substantial portion of uOttawa's intake — are blocked from claiming this credit entirely.
Even for eligible students, the award is unspecified. FLS 1XXX is a generic first-year elective in the French-as-a-second-language stream, not an equivalent to any named FLS course. Actual placement into the FLS sequence is governed by a language proficiency test administered through uOttawa's Second Language Institute — the transfer credit does not replace that process.
What to watch for:
- French-program students cannot claim French B HL credit — full stop. If you are enrolled in any program delivered in French at uOttawa, the FLS 1XXX credit is unavailable to you regardless of your IB score. This restriction does not apply to Français A credit (FRA 1710/1720), which has no such enrollment condition.
- The credit is a generic elective, not a named course equivalent. Holding FLS 1XXX transfer credit does not mean you have completed any specific FLS course. You will still need to take the Second Language Institute placement test to register in continuing FLS courses, and the credit may simply count as a free elective depending on your program.
- French B vs. Français A: a meaningful distinction. If you are a strong French speaker who took French B rather than Français A, note that the two subjects have different HL credit outcomes at uOttawa. Français A earns two named writing courses (FRA 1710 + FRA 1720) with no enrollment restriction. French B earns a generic elective that is unavailable to French-program students. The gap is significant.
If you took French B at SL, no credit applies at uOttawa. Contact the Second Language Institute to take the French language placement test after admission — this determines where you enter the FLS sequence, independent of your IB background.
If you took French B at HL and are enrolled in an English-language program, the 6-unit FLS 1XXX credit is available to you and worth claiming — it counts toward your degree even as a generic elective. If you are in a French-language program, the restriction applies and you will not receive it. In both cases, the placement test governs your actual FLS course registration.
