Does University of Alberta accept Chemistry SL?

Chemistry SL does not automatically grant transfer credit — but UAlberta offers a path. SL students may apply to write a Credit by Special Assessment examination in CHEM 101 (★3) (or CHEM 103 (★4.3) for Engineering students). This is essentially a challenge exam: if you pass, you earn the same credit as HL students. How does this compare to Chemistry HL credit?

The HL score threshold (important context for SL students): UAlberta awards automatic IB transfer credit only for a final grade of 6 or 7 in Chemistry HL — not 5. If HL students score below 6, they also receive no automatic Chemistry transfer credit — meaning SL students who pass the challenge exam can actually end up in the same position as high-scoring HL students (see UAlberta IB Transfer Credit and UAlberta Calendar: IB Course Equivalents).

What the credit looks like: If you pass the Credit by Special Assessment exam, you earn CHEM 101 (★3) — that's a specific, named course credit worth 3 units. Engineering students earn CHEM 103 (★4.3) instead. This is not generic or unassigned credit — it's the gateway first-year chemistry course that satisfies prerequisites (see Admissions Chart 4). If you also complete the full IB Diploma, you receive an additional 3 units in an open 100-level elective.

Engineering-specific caution (read this if you're entering Engineering): UAlberta's own IB transfer credit page warns that "IB courses do not cover the same applications as the first-year engineering courses" and that "you will end up missing a large amount of information relevant to Engineering students." Additionally, transfer credit for qualifying-year courses does not reduce the minimum load requirement of 37.0 units — meaning you still need a full course load even if you accept the credit. For non-Math and non-Chemistry IB courses, Engineering awards complementary studies elective credit only after admission to discipline in second year (see UAlberta IB Transfer Credit).

Declining credit — a one-way door: UAlberta allows you to decline transfer credit on a course-by-course basis, but this decision is final and cannot be reversed. If you decline and later wish you hadn't, you cannot get the credit back. To decline, you must contact IBstudent@ualberta.ca before the Fall Term course registration deadline (see UAlberta Calendar: IB Curriculum). Also be aware: accepting transfer credit may result in a lighter course load, which can affect eligibility for certain scholarships and programs.

Actionable strategy:

• Apply for the Credit by Special Assessment exam early: contact undergrad@chem.ualberta.ca well before the term starts — don't wait until orientation week. Ask about exam format, timing, and any prerequisite conditions.
• If you're entering Engineering: seriously consider whether the CHEM 103 credit (if earned via challenge exam) is worth it — you may want to use the freed-up space for a complementary studies elective or lighter load, not to skip content. If you're concerned about content gaps (especially for courses like CHEM 261 downstream), contact engginfo@ualberta.ca or book a faculty-specific advising session before deciding.
• If you're in Science, Arts, or another faculty: passing the challenge exam for CHEM 101 credit is straightforward value — it's a named course that satisfies prerequisites. Use it to reduce your course load or make room for other first-year requirements.
• Prepare seriously for the exam: IB Chemistry SL covers less content than HL. Review the CHEM 101 syllabus and past exams if available, and consider whether you need to self-study additional topics before sitting the assessment.
