Grade 6+ Required: The University of Alberta awards transfer credit for IB grades of 6 or 7 only. A grade of 5 may satisfy admission requirements but does not grant course credit.

Tuition Note: Savings shown are for domestic students (~$238/credit). International students pay significantly more (~$1,000+/credit).

💡Expert's Take

IB Physics HL can be a real advantage at the University of Alberta — but only if you treat it as strategic placement, not a free pass to skip everything. The credit you receive is generous (two full courses), but the value depends entirely on which physics stream your program actually uses.

IB Physics HL

Score requirement: UAlberta awards transfer credit only for a final grade of 6 or 7 — not 5. If you score below 6, you receive no Physics transfer credit (see UAlberta IB Transfer Credit and UAlberta Calendar: IB Course Equivalents).

What you actually receive: with a 6 or 7, UAlberta grants PHYS 124 — Particles and Waves (★3) and PHYS 126 — Fluids, Fields, and Radiation (★3), for a total of 6 units. These are specific, named course credits — not generic or unassigned. PHYS 124/126 is the algebra-based introductory physics sequence, designed primarily for students in life, environmental, and medical sciences (see PHYS 124 and PHYS 126). If you also complete the full IB Diploma, you receive an additional ★3 in an open 100-level elective on top of the Physics credit.

IB Physics SL

Physics SL also earns credit — but only half. With a grade of 6 or 7, UAlberta grants PHYS 124 (★3) only. You do not receive PHYS 126. This means you still need to take PHYS 126 (or its equivalent) if your program requires the full first-year physics sequence (see UAlberta AP & IB Handbook 2025-26).

Stream Fit — The #1 Thing to Check

The biggest nuance with Physics at UAlberta is stream fit. UAlberta offers three different first-year physics paths, and IB credit maps to only one of them:

  • PHYS 124/126 (algebra-based) — for life, environmental, and medical sciences. This is what IB Physics HL/SL maps to.
  • PHYS 144/146 (calculus-based) — for physical sciences majors (Physics, Astronomy, Geophysics). These courses go deeper into fewer topics using calculus. If your program expects PHYS 144/146, your IB credit for PHYS 124/126 does not substitute — you would need to take the calculus-based sequence.
  • EN PH 131 (Engineering Physics) — restricted to Engineering students. Covers mechanics with calculus prerequisites (MATH 100, ENGG 130). IB Physics does not grant EN PH 131 credit.

Key rule: UAlberta allows credit for only one of PHYS 124, PHYS 144, or EN PH 131. If you accept your IB credit for PHYS 124 and later need PHYS 144 or EN PH 131 for your program, the credit cannot be repurposed (see PHYS 124 credit restriction).

Engineering-Specific Caution

Engineering students take EN PH 131 in the qualifying year — not PHYS 124. IB Physics HL does not grant EN PH 131 credit. UAlberta's own IB transfer credit page warns that "IB courses do not cover the same applications as the first-year engineering courses" and that transfer credit for qualifying-year courses does not reduce the minimum load requirement of 37.0 units. In practice, IB Physics credit is largely irrelevant for Engineering students (see UAlberta IB Transfer Credit and Engineering Qualifying Year FAQ).

Declining Credit — A One-Way Door

UAlberta allows you to decline transfer credit on a course-by-course basis, but this decision is final and cannot be reversed. If you decline and later wish you hadn't, the credit is gone permanently. To decline, submit an IB Decline Transfer Credit form via IBstudent@ualberta.ca before the Fall Term course registration deadline. Also be aware: accepting transfer credit may result in a lighter course load, which can affect eligibility for certain scholarships and programs (see UAlberta Calendar: IB Curriculum).

Actionable strategy:

  • Physics HL, score 6+, program uses PHYS 124/126 (most BSc Science, Kinesiology, Nursing): Your credit is a clean win — both courses in the algebra-based sequence are covered. Use the freed-up space to reduce first-year overload or take an elective.
  • Physics HL, score 6+, program uses PHYS 144/146 (Physics major, Geophysics, Astronomy): Your IB credit maps to PHYS 124/126, not PHYS 144/146. Check your program requirements carefully — you may need to take the calculus-based sequence regardless of your IB credit. Consider declining the credit if it creates confusion.
  • Physics HL, score 6+, entering Engineering: Engineering uses EN PH 131, not PHYS 124. IB Physics credit does not help with qualifying-year requirements. The credit may still count as elective units later — contact engginfo@ualberta.ca to confirm.
  • Physics SL, score 6+: You receive PHYS 124 (★3) only — not PHYS 126. If your program requires the full sequence, plan to take PHYS 126 at UAlberta.
  • Score below 6 (HL or SL): No automatic credit. Your IB preparation is still strong groundwork for first-year physics.
