Does University of Calgary give transfer credit for IB Physics HL?

What to watch for:

• Schulich Engineering students: different physics sequence. The Schulich School of Engineering's common first-year program requires Mathematics 275 (fall) and Mathematics 277 and Physics 259 (winter) — not PHYS 221 or PHYS 223. UCalgary's transfer credit policy also notes that being granted transfer credit does not guarantee it will count toward a student's specific degree program requirements. Engineering-bound students should confirm with the Schulich Student Centre whether and how IB Physics credit applies before assuming it reduces their required coursework.
• Antirequisite restriction on PHYS 221. The PHYS 221 calendar entry states that credit for more than one of Physics 211, 221, or 227 will not be allowed. Students who receive IB credit for PHYS 221 cannot later take Physics 211 or 227 for credit. In practice this is rarely a concern, but students who are uncertain about their placement should be aware the restriction exists.
• CR grade on transcript. As with all IB transfer credit at UCalgary, both courses are recorded as "CR" (Credit Recognized) rather than a letter grade. This has no direct GPA impact. Students who have GPA-sensitive requirements — such as internal transfer targets, scholarship conditions, or faculty standing thresholds — should verify with their faculty advisor whether CR credits interact with those requirements, as the answer may vary by program.
