Does University of Ottawa give transfer credit for IB English A: Language and Literature HL?

What to watch for:

• Language-of-instruction restriction. uOttawa’s IB transfer credit table states: “You can’t receive these units if you’re enrolled in a program offered in English.” As a bilingual university, uOttawa offers many programs in both English and French streams. If your program is delivered in English, this restriction may apply to your English A credit. Confirm with the Registrar whether your specific program’s language of instruction triggers this exclusion.
• Programs that grant no IB transfer credits at all. Several programs explicitly exclude high school transfer credits entirely, including the BCom + JD and Political Science + JD dual degrees, as well as programs that limit credits such as Financial Mathematics and Economics, International Studies and Modern Languages, and dual fast-track programs in Health Sciences (see uOttawa advanced standing policies). Students admitted to any of these programs should verify eligibility before assuming the award applies.
• The English language proficiency exemption has a lower threshold than the transfer credit threshold. Passing IB English A (either variant, either level) with a grade of 4 satisfies uOttawa’s English language proficiency requirement (IBO recognition statement for uOttawa). The transfer credit threshold is higher at 5. Students who score exactly 4 on English A HL should be aware that while they may satisfy the language exemption, no course credit is granted at that score.
• Assessment happens after you accept your offer. Unlike universities with static published tables, uOttawa confirms transfer credits in a revised offer of admission issued after acceptance. The table above reflects published policy, but the university reserves the right to adjust outcomes on a case-by-case basis and may request a detailed course syllabus during the review.
