The Department of English and Creative Writing's current first-year sequence in its course information is ENGL-1002 (Writing about Literature) and the ENGL-1003/1004 British literature surveys, each restricted to majors in English and IAS. ENGL-1010 (Academic Writing) sits alongside as an Arts elective that does not count toward English major or minor requirements. A generic ENGL-1xxx award does not slot into any of these specifically; whether it can apply to an English requirement depends on the Academic Advising Report and program rules.
Implications for an English minor are tighter: the minor requires three 2000-level and two 3000-level ENGL courses plus one ENGL course at any level, and the department states that ENGL 1001 does not count toward the major or minor.
