πŸ’‘Expert's Take

Queen's awards MATH 121 (6.0 units) for IB Mathematics HL with a score of 5 or higher, in every faculty except Smith Engineering, which grants no credit. This is a named full-year calculus course, not generic elective credit, so it satisfies the calculus requirement in most Arts and Science programs. The exception that matters: Mathematics and Statistics degree plans require MATH 120 specifically, and holding MATH 121 blocks you from taking it (Queen's IB transfer credit tables).

Queen's lists this subject as "HL Mathematics" without separating Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) from Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI), so both streams appear to fall under the same row and receive the same MATH 121 credit. For certainty about your stream, contact Queen's Undergraduate Admission.

MATH 121 is the applied calculus stream, designed for students majoring in a subject other than Mathematics or Statistics. Queen's caps the MATH 120/121/123/124/126 group at 6.0 units, so accepting MATH 121 permanently closes the door on MATH 120.

What to watch for:

  • Smith Engineering, no credit at all. The Engineering IB transfer credit table lists "No Credit" for HL Mathematics, and you take APSC 171/172 regardless of your IB score.
  • Mathematics and Statistics plans, a conflict. Those plans require MATH 120, and MATH 121 excludes it.
  • Physics and most science plans, accept it. Prerequisites there read "MATH 120 or MATH 121", so the transfer credit does the job.
  • Health Sciences (BHSc), usable as an option course and enough to access upper-year courses that list MATH 121 as a prerequisite.
  • Smith Commerce, it counts but it is not COMM 161. The 6.0 units count toward your degree total, while COMM 161 is a separate Commerce-restricted course you still take.

Queen's posts eligible transfer credit to SOLUS automatically by September 15th and publishes no procedure for removing a credit once it is posted. The end-of-fall-term deadline applies to requesting additional credit that was missed, not to declining credit you already hold. If your plan needs the excluded Queen's course, ask your faculty how to resolve it before you register.

Official award line (IB Mathematics HL):
