π‘Expert's Take
One of the cleaner Queen's IB credits: a full named course, not a generic block. A score of 5 or higher grants ECON 110 (6.0 units) across Arts, Science, Commerce, Health Sciences, Nursing and Computing. ECON 110 is a full-year course spanning micro and macro, so the credit clears first-year economics in one award and carries the prerequisite into second-year theory courses, which also require calculus you must still complete.
What to watch for:
- Smith Engineering awards something weaker. Engineering does not grant ECON 110. It gives a generic "Humanities and Social Sciences" complementary studies credit (6.0 units), which fills a slot rather than replacing a named course, and Engineering caps complementary studies transfer credit at 6.0 units in total.
- Commerce students: The Smith Commerce IB table publishes one exclusion for this award, no more than 6.0 units from ECON 110, ECON 111 and ECON 112, and does not name COMM 171. Confirm any substitution for a required Commerce course with Commerce advising rather than assuming the credit covers it.
- The exclusion: you may hold only 6.0 units from the ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 112 group, so this credit closes off ECON 111 and ECON 112.
- The deadline applies to credit you still need to request. You must apply for transfer credit no later than the end of fall term of your first year. Requests submitted after that point are not assessed. Queen's posts eligible transfer credit to SOLUS automatically by September 15th. The end-of-fall-term deadline applies to requesting additional credit that was not posted, and a student who misses it is treated as having declined that additional credit. It is not a deadline that removes credit already on your record. Queen's also caps HL IB transfer credit at 18.0 units in total, so plan across all your HL subjects.
