💡Expert's Take
Yes — all three U of T campuses award 1.0 credit for IB Economics HL with a score of 5 or higher, but none of the three grant any program, prerequisite, or program-admission access. This is a clean sweep of No/No/No across UTSG, UTM, and UTSC — one of the most restrictive outcomes in the IB transfer credit system at U of T. The credit contributes to your degree unit total and breadth requirements, but it cannot open a single economics course door at any campus.
The three campuses differ in how they code the credit, and those differences carry subtle implications. At UTSG (St. George), you receive ECO1**Y — a 1.0 credit tagged as “Intro (BR=3),” which places it squarely in the Society and Its Institutions breadth category. This breadth placement is genuinely useful for science-track students who otherwise struggle to fill BR=3 — but it does not substitute for the gateway into any economics program. At UTSG, all economics programs require ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 (Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics — the two half-courses that replaced ECO100Y1 in 2017). Students must earn ≥63% in each to qualify for the Economics Major, Minor, and Rotman Commerce programs; the gateway to Specialist programs requires ≥70% in both.
At UTM (Mississauga), the credit is coded as SSC1**Y — a generic social science credit rather than an economics-coded one — and the official table note is explicit: “This credit is not acceptable towards any Economics program.” No other subject in the UTM IB chart carries a note this direct.
At UTSC (Scarborough), the credit is split into two half-credits coded MGEA**H3 + MGEA**H3 — using the actual Economics prefix (MGEA). Despite the suggestive coding, both half-credits carry No/No/No access. Students should not interpret the MGEA coding as implied equivalency to MGEA01H3 or MGEA02H3 (Introductory Microeconomics and Macroeconomics) — those courses still need to be taken for program purposes.
What to watch for:
- The credit does not unlock any economics course at any campus. At UTSG, ECO101H1 is a prerequisite for ECO102H1, and both are prerequisites for every 200-level ECO course. At UTM and UTSC, first-year introductory economics courses serve the same gating function. The IB credit bypasses none of these prerequisites.
- Rotman Commerce and economics specialist aspirants at UTSG are unaffected. Rotman Commerce requires ≥63% in both ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 (plus ≥63% in MAT133Y1 or equivalent) for program admission. The IB Economics credit cannot substitute for the graded performance requirement in those first-year courses. Plan to take ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 in your first year regardless of your IB result.
- No exclusion conflict with first-year ECO courses. Since the UTSG credit is an unspecified ECO1**Y (not a named course equivalent), enrolling in ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 afterward will not be flagged as a repeated course. You can safely accept the breadth credit and still complete the graded first-year sequence.
- The 3.0 transfer credit cap. Effective September 2025, all three campuses impose a maximum of 3.0 transfer credits across all secondary school curricula combined. Economics HL uses 1.0 of that allocation in exchange for breadth credit only. Students with multiple strong HL results in science or mathematics subjects — which can carry full prerequisite access at UTM or UTSC — should weigh whether Economics HL is the highest-value use of that allocation.
- Submission deadline. IB results must reach University Admissions directly from the IBO by July 31, 2026 for Fall 2026 entry. Results issued by your school are not accepted. At UTSC, the deadline to forfeit unwanted transfer credits is October 31, 2026.
Strategic advice: For most students entering economics or commerce programs, accepting the Economics HL credit is worth doing — but for a narrower reason than you might expect. At UTSG, the ECO1**Y credit satisfies the BR=3 (Society and Its Institutions) breadth requirement, which is often the hardest breadth category for students in Life Sciences, Computer Science, or Math-heavy programs to fill. If you are in one of those streams and hold an Economics HL result of 5 or higher, accepting this credit is a convenient way to knock out a breadth requirement without taking an extra course.
If you are entering an Economics, Commerce, or Social Sciences program at UTSG where you will naturally take many BR=3 courses anyway, the marginal value of the breadth credit is lower. In that case, using the slot on a science or language HL subject that carries actual prerequisite access — if you hold one — may be a better use of the 3.0-credit allocation. At UTM and UTSC, the social science distribution credit similarly adds degree units but no program-specific leverage.
If you prefer to preserve a graded first-year economics mark on your transcript (useful for grade-sensitive program applications like Rotman Commerce), you can choose to forfeit the transfer credit. The deadline to mark a credit as “extra” is May 31 in the year following your admission at UTSG and UTM; at UTSC the deadline to forfeit entirely is October 31 of your first fall term. Weigh the tuition cost of the equivalent course against this option before deciding.
