π‘Expert's Take
UNB does award transfer credit for IB Economics at the Higher Level. A qualifying Higher Level grade earns first-year economics credit, and the detail that matters most is that what you actually receive depends on your campus (UNB's published IB Higher Level chart).
At Saint John, the award is two named courses, each worth 3 ch: ECON 1013 (Introduction to Microeconomics) and ECON 1023 (Introduction to Macroeconomics). These are the standard prerequisites for the intermediate micro and macro sequence and are required courses in the Saint John Economics major and minor, so an incoming economics student may reach 2000-level courses sooner. Course access is not the same as program standing: the Economics programs set their own minimum grades (a C or better in required courses, with higher bars for honours), which transfer credit alone does not satisfy (see the Saint John and Fredericton Economics program rules).
At Fredericton, the chart awards only unassigned "1000-level Economics," not the named ECON 1013 and 1023 (which Fredericton titles Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics). Before counting that generic credit toward a degree, confirm with the Economics department whether it satisfies named foundations, prerequisites, or major and minor requirements, since the Fredericton Arts and Science Economics programs list ECON 1013 and 1023 by name.
What to watch for:
- Only Higher Level exams are eligible. Standard Level Economics earns no transfer credit at UNB.
- Qualifying for the posted award by score is a separate question from whether that award applies to your program. Treat the score threshold as eligibility, and confirm degree applicability in your transfer-credit assessment.
- At Fredericton, engineering and computer science students take their own economics course, ECON 1073 (Economics for Engineers), which is open only to those students and cannot be combined with ECON 1023. Do not assume the generic IB Economics award satisfies or stacks with it.
- Send your official IB results directly from the IB Organization to UNB. Transfer credit is assessed after you are admitted.
Official award line (Economics, Higher Level):
Minimum score: 5, 6 or 7
Credit granted: ECON 1013 & ECON 1023, 3 ch each (Saint John); 1000-level Economics (Fredericton)
