πŸ’‘Expert's Take

Economics HL earns a named two-course equivalency, not unspecified credit. A score of 5 or better converts to Economics 1010 (Principles of Microeconomics) and Economics 1011 (Principles of Macroeconomics), 0.5 FCE each, the same pair required as the entry point to second-year economics courses.

Two of Lakehead's own pages currently disagree, so read carefully. The older IB-specific admissions page still lists the award as Economics 1100, a course that no longer appears in the 2026-2027 calendar (the calendar notes that students with Economics 1100 credit may not take Economics 1010 or 1011 for credit). The pages also differ on process: the current Advanced Standing page says credit "is automatically awarded" once final official results arrive, while its IB section says qualifying students "may be considered." If either point matters to your plans, get written confirmation from Lakehead rather than relying on one page.

What to watch for: A maximum of 3.0 FCE may be awarded across all eligible secondary-school coursework, so stack multiple HL subjects with that cap in mind. Engineering programs are not eligible for advanced standing. Assessments are not completed after your first year, except on a program change, where an official IBO transcript is required again and only credits applicable to the new program are granted. SL courses earn no advanced-standing credit, though they can still be presented for admission prerequisites in most subjects.

Official award line (IB Economics HL):
Minimum score: 5 ("a score of five (5) or better")
Credit granted: Economics 1010 - Principles of Microeconomics and Economics 1011 - Principles of Macroeconomics, credit weight 0.5 each, 1.0 total
