💡Expert's Take
Expert’s Take
A score of 5 or higher on IB Economics HL earns a named equivalency, not a generic junior elective: AP/ECON 1000 3.00 (Introduction to Microeconomics) plus AP/ECON 1010 3.00 (Introduction to Macroeconomics), for 6 credits per the IB Exemptions and Credits table. York frames that table as a guide, with transfer credit assessed based on each student’s academic program.
ECON 1000 and 1010 together are the foundational pair for economics degree studies at York, but they are not a universal gate into every upper-year course. Published prerequisites vary by course: AP/ECON 2500 only requires Grade 12U Advanced Functions or equivalent, AP/ECON 3210 only requires AP/ECON 2500, and AP/ECON 3350 requires AP/ECON 1000 or AP/ECON 1010, not both. Check each target course’s own prerequisite line before planning.
What to watch for:
- The IB award does not open the main 2000-level theory sequence on its own. AP/ECON 2300 (Intermediate Microeconomic Theory I) and AP/ECON 2400 (Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory I) also require AP/ECON 1530 and AP/ECON 1540 (Introductory Mathematical Economics I and II), which the IB Economics award does not provide.
- York’s current sources disagree on internal sequencing: the Department of Economics AP/ECON 1010 course-description page states that AP/ECON 1000 3.00 is NOT a prerequisite for AP/ECON 1010 3.00, while the 2025–26 Undergraduate Handbook and the Fall 2025 ECON 1010 course outline say ECON 1000 is a required pre-requisite that must be passed before enrolling in 1010 and that the two should not be taken at the same time. The IB award sidesteps this question by granting both at once, but students should confirm sequencing with an advisor against their intended term.
- For the Schulich BBA, the IB-awarded AP/ECON credits are already mapped: SB/ECON 1000 lists AP/ECON 1000 as a course credit exclusion, and SB/ECON 1010 lists AP/ECON 1010 as a course credit exclusion, which means BBA students cannot hold credit for both versions of the same course.
Use the 6 credits to clear first-year introductory economics, then sequence the remaining prerequisites your target courses actually ask for (commonly Mathematical Economics I and II for intermediate theory, or Advanced Functions for statistics). If you prefer an in-class foundation for grade or graduate-school reasons, note York’s forfeiture rule: “if a student is granted a course exclusion and chooses to repeat the exclusion while at York, transfer credit granted will be forfeited”, so repeating ECON 1000 or ECON 1010 at York results in loss of the IB-granted credit.
