💡Expert's Take

The award is generic English credit, not an equivalency for a specific UBC course. The Okanagan first-year credit table lists ENGL_O at the first-year level with no course number attached, which is what determines whether the credit clears a requirement your degree actually imposes or lands in your elective pool.

How much that matters depends entirely on the faculty you enter, because each writes its English rule differently. The Bachelor of Arts, for students entering in 2026/2027 or later, builds its six-credit writing and composition requirement from two lists of named courses, and credit without a course number is on neither list. By contrast the Bachelor of Science frames its rule as six credits of English or Communications before promotion to fourth-year standing, and the 2026/2027 Bachelor of Commerce simply asks for three credits of ENGL_O. Engineering sits outside this entirely: its first-year curriculum uses APSC_O 176 for communication and no ENGL_O at all. UBC publishes these requirements by entry cohort, so read the version that matches your start year.

What to watch for:

  • Nothing is exempted along with it. When UBC wants an award to displace named courses it spells that out in the same table, as the Biology HL entry does with its BIOL_O exemptions. The English entry says nothing of the kind, so first-year composition remains available to you.
  • You can turn the credit down, but check first. UBC's wording is that you "may choose to refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway," alongside a request on the same page to "consult an academic advisor at UBC before registering for second-year courses." Even unspecified credit shortens what you still owe the degree, so get advice before declining six credits.
