Named courses, and they are the two the Psychology major names by name. A 5 earns PSYO_O 111 and PSYO_O 121, Introduction to Psychology: Basic Processes and Personal Functioning. UBC Okanagan says students "can self declare in Workday after completing PSYO 111 and 121 (or equivalent) and a minimum of 24 credits". The award is that equivalent, so it settles one of the two declaration conditions before you arrive.
It also opens the major's required research sequence. PSYO_O 270, which the Calendar calls "a required course for students majoring in Psychology", lists PSYO_O 111 and PSYO_O 121 as its prerequisite, and 270 in turn leads to PSYO_O 271. What the award does not do is compress the rest of the degree: the 24-credit threshold still applies, and 270 and 271 normally sit in second year. This applies to the BSc in Psychology as much as the BA, since both require the same introductory pair.
What to watch for:
- Think twice before refusing it. UBC states you may "refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway", but declaring Psychology at the Okanagan is not competitive: it is a self-declaration, with no average or promotion requirement, unlike Political Science and Sociology on that same page. Giving up six credits to sit graded introductory Psychology buys you nothing at the declaration stage. Speak to advising before refusing.
- The Okanagan subject code is PSYO, not PSYC. Vancouver awards PSYC_V 101 and PSYC_V 102 for the same result. The two campuses assess against their own tables, so a credit granted at one is re-evaluated if you move.
- Standard Level has no published award. Psychology SL is not a row on either campus table. UBC does say that "all Higher Level and some Standard Level IB courses will be considered" and that the table "is not exhaustive", so it is not a stated refusal, but no threshold or award is published for it.
