This is general credit, but in History that happens to be the currency UBC Okanagan actually uses. The Okanagan table awards six credits of HIST_O at the first-year level, tied to no named course. Yet most 300-level HIST_O courses write their prerequisite as "6 credits of HIST", which is exactly what this award is. Generic credit is usually the weak outcome. Here it lines up with how the upper-level History curriculum gates itself.
Confirm it rather than assume it. UBC defines general credit as credit for a subject and year level that "may not automatically apply towards a specific requirement but is useful for elective requirements", so check how it posts in Workday before you build a registration plan on it. Where a requirement names a course, this award cannot reach it: the 2026/27 BA satisfies Critical Thinking with HIST_O 145 and Scientific Literacy with HIST_O 118, both specific courses, and generic first-year HIST_O is neither.
What to watch for:
- In a History major it covers half of one component. The major requires 12 credits of 100/200-level HIST_O plus 6 more that must include at least 3 credits of Canadian history from a named list. Six generic credits speak to the first figure, not to the named Canadian-history courses.
- UBC publishes no History stacking rule. If you hold more than one eligible History subject, nothing on the table says the awards collapse into one, and nothing promises they add up either. Note that Islamic History HL is a separate row awarding generic ARTS_O credit instead. Ask Enrolment Services how your combination is assessed.

- Declining it does not hand you a course. UBC states you may "refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway", which is written for named awards. There is no single HIST_O course behind this one, so refusing means giving up six credits and then choosing History courses on their own prerequisites.
