π‘Expert's Take
Six credits of general ECON_O credit, and none of it counts inside an Economics program. The award is not equivalency for ECON_O 101, Principles of Microeconomics, or ECON_O 102, Principles of Macroeconomics. An Economics student still takes both.
Do not read this as a reason to choose Vancouver. The Vancouver table carries no such note, but the restriction is there all the same, written into the programs rather than the credit table: the Vancouver School of Economics excludes unassigned first-year transfer credit, naming ECON 1st explicitly, from the 42 credits required for the Major, the 60 for Honours and the 30 for the Minor, and its admission requirements name ECON_V 101 and 102. Both campuses reach the same place. The Okanagan simply says so on the table.
What the credit is worth is therefore elective weight, six credits toward the 120 your degree needs, subject to how your faculty applies it. Note one trap in the 2026/27 Bachelor of Arts: its Scientific Literacy or Numeracy foundational requirement is satisfied by a named list that includes ECON_O 101 and 102 specifically, so generic ECON_O credit does not fill that slot.
What to watch for:
- Certificate candidates should confirm first. The Okanagan credit table introduces its IB list with students who completed the IB diploma, while the Okanagan Calendar states the award for anyone reaching the score, with no diploma condition attached. A certificate applicant should confirm eligibility with Admissions rather than treat the table as settled.
- Refusal is available, but check before you use it. UBC states you may "refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway", and asks students eligible for first-year credit to consult an academic advisor before registering in second-year courses. Since this award blocks nothing and names no course, refusing it is rarely the way to reach ECON_O 101 and 102.
- Standard Level is also awarded. See the Economics SL page for that award.
