Two named courses that are themselves program requirements, which is better than the credit count suggests. A 5 awards FREN_O 122 and FREN_O 123, Intermediate French I and II. The major, combined major, and minor in French all count that exact pair in the first two years, and both courses appear on the 2026/27 BA language acquisition list. So the award can retire real requirements rather than sitting as elective padding.
Because these are named courses, UBC treats them as specific credit: used "as if the course was taken at UBC", with the instruction that "you should not register in this course at UBC as you cannot receive credit twice for the same course". Taking FREN_O 122 or 123 for a grade is not a fallback you can quietly keep open. That decision belongs to the refusal route on the credit table, not to registration.
What to watch for:
- Where this leaves you depends on assessed proficiency, not on the award. FREN_O 223 is the prerequisite most 300-level FREN_O courses name, and 122 and 123 sit below the 222 and 223 pair. But UBC Okanagan's placement guidance sends low-B2 students to 222 and 223 while high-B2 students may be eligible for 300-level courses after consulting the French program advisor. Ask before assuming two more courses.
- Only one French A stream earns more than this. French A: Language and Literature HL earns FREN_O 222 and 223. French A SL earns this same pair, and French A: Literature HL earns one named course plus generic credit, which is arguably weaker than what French B HL gets.
- Vancouver awards a different level entirely. The Vancouver table gives FREN_V 301 and 302 for this subject. UBC assesses each campus separately.
- Standard Level has no published award. French B SL is not a row on the Okanagan table. UBC does say that "all Higher Level and some Standard Level IB courses will be considered" and that the table "is not exhaustive", so an SL result is not an automatic refusal, but nothing is guaranteed and no threshold is published.
