π‘Expert's Take
This is a named second-year award, not generic elective credit, and that is what makes it worth more than the credit count suggests. The Okanagan table awards FREN_O 222 and FREN_O 223, French Language and Style I and II. FREN_O 223 is the listed prerequisite for most 300-level FREN_O courses, so the award satisfies that prerequisite. It is not automatic placement: the 222 and 223 calendar entries still tell you to contact the instructor on record to join a 300-level section.
What the award does not give you is the level underneath it. FREN_O 122 and 123 are a separate line on the table, awarded for French A SL, and the French program states that students placed above the lower-level courses "will need to replace missing lower-level credits with additional courses". How much that costs you depends on the program. The combined major and the minor both require FREN_O 122, 123, 222 and 223 by name, so two of the four stay outstanding. The major is looser: it asks only for 6 credits from a menu on which FREN_O 222 and 223 are one option, so this award can satisfy that requirement outright. Confirm your own path with a French program advisor before assuming time saved.
What to watch for:
- Official sources disagree on whether you could take these courses. The Calendar says FREN_O 222 and 223 are not available to students who completed Francais 12 at a Francophone school or who sit at CEFR level B2 or higher, while UBC Okanagan's language placement guidance directs low-B2 students to start with 222 and 223 and high-B2 students to the French program advisor. Do not assume either outcome without asking.
- This award is Okanagan-only. Vancouver grants FREN_V 401 and FREN_V 402 for the same subject, a different level of the curriculum entirely. UBC assesses each campus against its own table.
- Standard Level sits two courses lower. The Okanagan table places French A: Language and Literature SL at FREN_O 122 and FREN_O 123, the intermediate pair that 222 and 223 build on.
- You are allowed to turn it down, but that is not the same as being able to register. UBC states you may choose to "refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway", and advises consulting an academic advisor before registering in second-year courses. FREN_O 222 still lists FREN_O 123 as its prerequisite, and the French program requires language courses to be taken in sequence.
In the BA, this is more than elective padding. FREN_O 222 and 223 both appear on the language acquisition list for the 2026/27 Communication foundational requirement, so a named-course award for them can count against 3 credits of a requirement you would otherwise have to sit, with the remaining 3 credits falling to electives.
