Half of this award is general credit, and UBC Okanagan is explicit about what that means. The Okanagan table awards FREN_O 221 plus three credits at the second-year level left unspecified. UBC defines general credit as credit for a subject and year level that "may not automatically apply towards a specific requirement but is useful for elective requirements". Read the unspecified half as three elective credits, and do not expect it to become FREN_O 223 on its own.
The named half has a problem of its own. FREN_O 221 does not appear anywhere in the current Academic Calendar FREN_O listing, which runs 101 to 104, 115, 122, 123, 215, 222 and 223 at the lower levels. Yet the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies French planning page still describes FREN 221 as an optional second-year course taken to gain access to upper-level literature courses. The official sources disagree with each other, so treat the award as six credits of second-year French and ask Enrolment Services to confirm in writing what actually posts to your record.
What to watch for:
- This is the literature route, not the language route. FREN_O 223 is the prerequisite named by most 300-level FREN_O courses, and this award does not include it. It is not a universal gate either: FREN_O 380 requires only third-year standing, and FREN_O 344 has its own placement routes.
- Neither half counts toward the BA language requirement. The 2026/27 language acquisition list names FREN_O 101 to 104, 122, 123, 215, 222, 223 and 344. FREN_O 221 is absent, and general credit is not a listed course, so in a BA this lands as electives.
- The sister subject is treated better. French A: Language and Literature HL is awarded FREN_O 222 and FREN_O 223, both named courses and both on that BA list. Two closely related IB subjects, two different outcomes. At Standard Level, French A: Literature SL is awarded FREN_O 122 and FREN_O 123.
- Refusing it does not give you a course to take. UBC states you may choose to "refuse the first-year credit and take the course anyway", but FREN_O 221 is not in the current Calendar and generic second-year credit is not a registrable course, so there may be nothing to sit for a grade in either half.
If you intend to carry French, note that the major, combined major, and minor in French each name FREN_O 122, 123, 222, 223 and 353 as requirements. Nothing in this award substitutes for any of them, so plan on the full sequence and check your Academic Progress Report in Workday to see where the six credits actually land.
