Exam-focused by design

What an AP tutor can help you do

AP rewards two things: knowing the course and answering in the shape the scoring guidelines reward. Sessions train both, one-to-one.

Course content mastery

Close gaps in the actual AP syllabus for the student's course, from Calculus limits to Chemistry equilibrium to rhetorical analysis, taught one-to-one at the student's pace.

Free-response technique

AP free-response questions are marked against published scoring guidelines. Tutors train students to answer in the shape the rubric rewards, using released questions and real scoring notes.

10 essential tips for AP success

Timed exam simulation

For most AP courses the May exam decides the score, so the final stretch matters: timed full papers begin three to four weeks before exam day, with review targeted at what the practice reveals.

AP subjects we cover

One flat rate for every tutor and every subject. Select a subject to see what its exam involves and how tutoring attacks it. If a course is not listed here, ask us: our roster covers other AP subjects on request.

AP Calculus AB & BC

The classic STEM gatekeeper

The exam

Multiple-choice plus six free-response problems, split into calculator and no-calculator parts. BC covers everything in AB and adds series, parametric, and polar topics, and reports an AB subscore alongside the BC score.

How tutoring helps

We rebuild shaky precalculus foundations first, then drill free-response setups and the justification language AP readers actually award points for.

Clear boundary

Coaching is allowed; shortcuts are not

The only score improvement that survives exam day is the student actually getting better. Our boundary keeps every session on that side of the line.

Tutors can

  • Teach course content and close knowledge gaps one-to-one.
  • Train multiple-choice and free-response technique on released College Board questions.
  • Run timed practice exams and review them against official scoring guidelines.
  • Give feedback on practice essays and problem sets the student writes.
  • Advise on course selection, exam registration timelines, and study planning.

Tutors do not

  • Complete graded homework, take-home assessments, or Capstone performance tasks for the student.
  • Write essays or lab work the student submits as their own.
  • Guarantee a 5, a specific score, or college credit.
  • Help with anything that violates College Board exam security or school rules.

Students should also follow their school's rules for outside support. The full company standard is published at The Hack Your Course Standard.

How AP tutoring sessions work

  1. 1

Tell us the student's AP courses, school, exam session, and latest scores or grades.

  2. 2

Work through content and technique in weekly one-to-one online sessions; graphing tablets are required for Math and Science so tutor and student can solve problems together in real time.

  3. 3

Three to four weeks before exam day, sessions shift to timed full papers reviewed against official scoring guidelines.

AP families, on the record

Real Google reviews from families we tutored through AP courses and exams, shown with the names and photos they made public on Google.

We urgently needed Calculus tutoring for my son, and we found HYC quite late in the year. But that did not matter to them; they acted very quickly, introducing us to an excellent tutor who specialized in Calculus tutoring. The quality of the math tutoring we received was outstanding, making a significant difference in Arshia's performance.

I had Arjoon for AP calculus and he was great! Very understanding and didn’t take this too slow or fast. As someone trying to get my grades from low 90s to high 90s he was great at helping me get all the details sorted so I could reach my goal, which I did.

AP tutoring questions

Which AP subjects do you tutor?

The full range our families ask for: AP Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Physics 1, 2 and C, Chemistry, Biology, English Language and English Literature, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, and the AP Capstone courses. If the student's AP subject is not on that list, ask us: our roster covers other AP courses on request.

How are AP exams scored, and what score do colleges want?

AP exams are scored 1 to 5 by the College Board. Many colleges award credit or advanced placement for a 3 or higher, but every college sets its own policy and selective programs often expect a 4 or 5, so check the policy at each college on the student's list rather than assuming.

When are AP exams, and when should tutoring start?

AP exams are administered by the College Board each May on a fixed schedule. Consistent weekly tutoring through the year beats a late scramble, and in the final three to four weeks sessions shift to timed full practice papers so exam day holds no surprises.

Does AP coursework count toward the final score?

For most AP courses, no: the May exam alone decides the score, whatever the class grade says. The exceptions are portfolio and Capstone courses such as AP Seminar, AP Research, and AP Art and Design, which include through-course performance tasks. That exam-centric structure is exactly why trained technique on released questions matters so much.

Should my child take AP or IB?

They are different systems: AP is a menu of standalone exam-centric courses, while the IB Diploma is an integrated programme with internal assessments and a core. The right choice depends on the student's school, strengths, and university plans. We tutor both, so our advice is not tied to selling one pathway.

What is Pre-AP, and do you support it?

Official Pre-AP courses are a College Board program, but many schools label their own honors classes the same way, and the difference matters for planning. Yes, we support students in Pre-AP and honors courses building toward AP.

Do you support AP Capstone (Seminar and Research)?

Yes. AP Seminar and AP Research build toward the AP Capstone Diploma and include through-course performance tasks. Tutors coach research skills, argumentation, and presentation technique, and give feedback on student-written drafts; the submitted work remains the student's own, as College Board rules require.

Will the tutor do homework or write essays for the student?

No. Tutors teach, train technique, and give feedback on the student's own work; they never complete graded assignments, write essays for submission, or touch anything covered by College Board exam security. Score improvement comes from the student getting better, which is the only kind that survives exam day.
