Focused TOK support

What an IB TOK tutor can help you do

Sessions focus on understanding, reasoning, and independent revision: not on producing assessed work for the student.

TOK essay planning

Interpret the prescribed title, identify the knowledge questions it raises, and plan a focused line of inquiry before drafting.

Argument and example testing

Discuss whether claims, counterclaims, implications, and real-world examples actually support the student's reasoning.

TOK exhibition preparation

Understand the selected prompt, specific real-world contexts, and how each object can illuminate a distinct aspect of the prompt.

Feedback and revision priorities

Receive comments on clarity, focus, organization, and use of evidence, then make every revision independently.

Clear boundary

Feedback is allowed; authorship stays with the student

The IB expects genuine, authentic student work. Our tutoring boundary is designed to support learning while protecting that authorship.

Tutors can

  • Teach TOK concepts and explain assessment terminology.
  • Ask planning questions and help build a realistic work schedule.
  • Test reasoning through discussion and point out gaps or ambiguity.
  • Comment on a student-written draft without editing or rewriting it.
  • Explain citation and source-evaluation practices.

Tutors do not

  • Choose the student's argument, objects, or examples for them.
  • Write, rewrite, paraphrase, or line-edit assessed text.
  • Generate a submission for the student to present as their own.
  • Guarantee a mark, grade, predicted grade, or admission outcome.

Students should also follow their school's rules for external support and disclosure. Read the IB's academic-integrity guidance.

I have two children worked with this tutoring services, for IB English. It's very difficult to find good private IB tutors, but this one is satisfied. Thanks for Rob and the Hack Your Course AP & IB Tutoring Service.

Actually, I am super happy that I found this center, as my daughter needed help with her English and art. The center is well-organized and very responsive to emails, promptly replying and following up. They arranged the first session very quickly and introduced the tutor. Constantine is one of the best teachers I have seen.

Can a TOK tutor write or rewrite my essay or exhibition commentary?

No. Hack Your Course tutors do not write, rewrite, paraphrase, line-edit, or generate assessed TOK work. They can provide planning support and comments that the student evaluates and acts on independently.

Does TOK tutoring cover both the essay and the exhibition?

Yes. Sessions can address the 1,600-word TOK essay or the exhibition, including prompt interpretation, planning, reasoning, examples, object-context links, and revision priorities within academic-integrity limits.

What is TOK in the IB programme?

Theory of Knowledge is one of the three mandatory core components of the IB Diploma Programme, alongside the Extended Essay and CAS. Rather than adding new content, it asks students to examine how knowledge is produced and evaluated across subjects, starting from questions like how we know what we claim to know. It is assessed through an internally assessed exhibition and an externally assessed 1,600-word essay.

Is IB TOK hard?

TOK is challenging in an unfamiliar way rather than a content-heavy way. There is little to memorize; the difficulty lies in analyzing knowledge questions, connecting them to precise real-world examples, and writing against the assessment instruments. Students who practise structuring their reasoning usually find it manageable, and TOK is graded A to E rather than on the 1 to 7 subject scale.

What are the 12 TOK concepts in IB?

The current TOK course highlights twelve central concepts: certainty, culture, evidence, explanation, interpretation, justification, objectivity, perspective, power, responsibility, truth, and values. They recur across the core theme, the optional themes, and the areas of knowledge, and strong essays and exhibitions use them precisely rather than decoratively.

How many points is TOK in IB?

TOK carries no points on its own. It is graded A to E and combined with the Extended Essay grade through the IB core matrix, which awards up to 3 additional points toward the 45-point diploma maximum. An E in either TOK or the Extended Essay means the diploma is not awarded, so the core deserves real attention.
