❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IB & AP Biology FAQs

Expert answers to the most common questions from parents and students about IB and AP Biology courses.

Part 1: Choosing the Right Path

Is it true that IB Biology HL is "harder" than AP Biology?

📌 The Verdict: They are difficult in different ways.

Many students experience AP Biology as a "sprint"—it covers a massive breadth of content quickly to mimic a two-semester college course. IB Biology HL is often felt as a "marathon"; while the content volume is slightly lower, it requires deeper analysis and a significant independent research project (the Scientific Investigation) that spans months.

My child wants to study Engineering. Should they take IB Biology HL?

📌 The Verdict: Usually not necessary; depends on the pathway.

Unless the student is aiming for Biomedical Engineering or has a genuine personal interest, taking Biology HL is rarely required for engineering admissions. Top programs (like Waterloo or U of T) prioritize Math and Physics. Taking Biology HL as a "third science" can increase workload significantly, potentially taking focus away from Math HL and Physics.

What is the fundamental difference in teaching style?

AP Biology: Focuses heavily on Science Practices—applying concepts to new scenarios, analyzing data sets, and moving quickly through "Big Ideas."

IB Biology: Focuses on the Nature of Science—understanding how we know what we know, international contexts, and deep, long-term experimental research through the Internal Assessment.

Part 2: The Transition

Why do students often struggle with their first test after moving from MYP Science to DP Biology?

The shift to precision. In MYP, students may receive credit for understanding the "general concept." In IB DP and AP, marks are awarded based on rigid mark-schemes. If a student writes "energy is created" instead of "energy is released/transferred," they may lose the point. Success requires mastering specific biological vocabulary.

There's also an unwritten rule that students are often passed automatically up to Grade 10, which allows some students to enter Grade 11 with significant knowledge gaps they must address first.

How much Math is actually in these Biology courses?

More than most parents expect.

AP: Requires Chi-Square analysis, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and Water Potential calculations.

IB: Requires Standard Deviation, T-tests, Simpson's Diversity Index, and Percentage Error calculations.

Tip: If a student struggles with Statistics, they may lose "easy" points in Biology.

My student struggled in Chemistry. Will they fail Biology?

They won't necessarily fail, but they may face early challenges. Both AP (Unit 1) and IB (Theme A) rely heavily on Biochemistry. Students often benefit from a targeted review of bonding, polarity, acids/bases, and energetics before the course begins with Chemistry tutoring.

Part 3: Curriculum & Coursework

I heard the IB Biology syllabus changed. What do parents need to know?

Ensure resources are aligned to the current guide (First Assessment 2025). The former "Options" structure (Neurobiology, Ecology, etc.) is no longer part of the guide; content is now organized through 4 broad themes. The exam format emphasizes data-based questions in Paper 1B. Our tutors use materials explicitly designed for this current syllabus.

Can students collaborate on the IB Internal Assessment (Scientific Investigation)?

Yes, with strict limits. The current guide allows students to collaborate in small groups (usually max 3) to gather data (e.g., sharing a complex sensor setup). However, each student must have a unique research question (different variables) and must write their own independent report. Learn more about the Science IA requirements.

Can students use AI (like ChatGPT) for their IB Internal Assessment?

The IB policy states that students must maintain academic integrity. While AI can be used for brainstorming, students must acknowledge AI tool use where it meaningfully contributes to the work. Using AI to write the report or generate fake data is academic malpractice and will result in a failing grade.

Part 4: Tutoring Strategy

When is the high-impact window to start tutoring for these courses?

For AP: 2 weeks before school starts (to review Chemistry basics) or immediately after the first low test score. The course moves too fast to play catch-up.

For IB: The summer between Year 1 and Year 2—but only after the teacher has approved the IA title/research question. Once approved, summer is the ideal time to draft the Internal Assessment (IA) without the pressure of other schoolwork.

Is online tutoring effective for a lab-based science course?

Yes. The exams heavily weight data analysis and application rather than physical dexterity. Online tutors use screen-sharing to run virtual simulations (Gizmos/PhET) and analyze raw data in Excel/Sheets. This effectively targets the skills needed for the "Data-Based Questions" on the actual exams.

What question should I ask a tutor to verify they are qualified?

Ask them: "How do you prepare students for the Data-Based Questions in IB Paper 1B?" or "How do you teach the statistical requirements for the AP Labs?" If they only talk about "helping with homework," they may not be equipped for the specific exam prep required today. Learn how we're different.

Part 5: University Credit & Admissions

What score is realistically needed to get credit at a top North American university?

AP: Generally a 4 or 5.

IB: Many universities (and faculties) prioritize Higher Level (HL) scores of 5, 6, or 7.

Note: Credit for IB Standard Level (SL) courses is less consistently awarded at competitive institutions. Use our IB Credit Transfer Tool to check specific university policies.

What is the "Double Jeopardy" risk for Pre-Med students?

Critical Warning: Even if a student earns AP/IB credit, many Medical Schools require prerequisite science courses to be taken at the university level. Skipping "Intro Biology" can backfire if the student is forced to take a harder upper-year course to satisfy the requirement. Always check the specific policy of your target medical school. Learn more about IB/AP and college admissions.

Does taking AP/IB Biology help if my child is NOT a STEM major?

At many universities, earning a high score can fulfill "General Education" or distribution requirements for natural science. This may allow a Business or Humanities major to skip a mandatory lab science course in college—but outcomes vary by institution. Check our IB Credit Transfer Tool for specifics.

Do Canadian universities prefer IB or AP?

Admissions generally evaluate the strength of the program, grades, and prerequisites. Both are highly respected. Students often report that the IB Diploma prepares them well for the workload and writing demands of Canadian universities, while AP students often feel well-prepared for the specific content of first-year science courses.

Is Pre-AP Biology harder than standard Grade 9/10 Science?

Pre-AP is designed to build AP-ready skills (evidence-based reasoning, data interpretation, and academic writing). While it isn't officially an "honors" program, many schools run it with higher expectations and a faster pace to bridge the gap to AP.
