Focused humanities support

What an IB humanities tutor can help you do

Sessions build analytical writing, source skills, and exam technique across Economics, History, Psychology, Geography, and Global Politics—not assessed work written for the student.

Essay and paper technique

Practise the essay structures each subject rewards: interpreting the question, planning under time pressure, and supporting an argument with precise evidence and terminology.

Source and data analysis

Build the skills History Paper 1 and Economics data questions test: evaluating sources, reading data, and connecting evidence to the question actually asked.

Internal Assessment guidance

Refine the IA topic and question, plan the research, and receive comments on clarity and criteria alignment on student-written drafts, from Economics commentaries to the historical investigation.

Exam preparation and review

Review the syllabus systematically, drill past-paper questions under timed conditions, and target the command terms and mark bands examiners apply.

Clear boundary

Coaching is allowed; authorship stays with the student

The IB expects genuine, authentic student work in every essay and Internal Assessment. Our tutoring boundary supports learning while protecting authorship.

Tutors can

  • Explain course requirements, assessment criteria, and command terms.
  • Teach essay, source-analysis, and data-response technique on practice material.
  • Ask planning questions that sharpen IA topics and research questions.
  • Run timed past-paper practice and discuss what a stronger answer would include.
  • Comment on a student-written draft without editing or rewriting it.

Tutors do not

  • Choose the student's IA topic, sources, or argument for them.
  • Write, rewrite, paraphrase, or line-edit assessed work.
  • Generate any essay, commentary, or investigation for submission.
  • Guarantee a mark, grade, predicted grade, or admission outcome.

Students should also follow their school's rules for external support and disclosure. Read the IB's academic-integrity guidance.

How IB humanities tutoring sessions work

  1. 1

Share the student's subject and level, current task, school deadlines, and questions.

  2. 2

Work through content, technique, and assessment criteria in a live one-to-one session.

  3. 3

Leave with student-owned next steps; all assessed work remains the student's work.

IB humanities tutoring questions

What can an IB humanities tutor help with?

A tutor can teach the subject content, unpack assessment criteria and command terms, train essay and source-analysis technique on past-paper material, help the student plan their Internal Assessment, and comment on clarity, structure, and criteria alignment in student-written drafts. The student remains responsible for every idea, source choice, and final sentence.

Can a tutor write or edit my essays or Internal Assessment?

No. Hack Your Course tutors do not write, rewrite, paraphrase, or line-edit assessed work in any subject. They teach technique, run practice, and give comments that the student evaluates and acts on independently, in line with IB academic-integrity expectations.

How does the IB Economics IA work?

The Economics IA is a portfolio of three commentaries, each capped at 800 words including citations, written on published news articles and analyzed through different areas of the syllabus. A tutor can help the student choose workable articles, apply the right diagrams and theory, and stay inside the word limit, while the writing remains the student's own.

Can tutoring help with History source questions and essays?

Yes. History sessions train the skills the papers actually test: evaluating sources for origin, purpose, and content, planning essays that argue rather than narrate, and using precise evidence under time pressure. HL students also prepare for the additional regional-depth paper, and IA support follows the same guidance-only boundary.

My child is in the updated Psychology or Global Politics course. Does that matter?

It matters for materials and exam practice, because the IB has updated several individuals and societies syllabuses in recent years and past papers from older syllabuses do not always match the current assessment. Confirm the student's assessment session with the school's IB coordinator, and we will match a tutor who teaches to the current guide for that session.

Can a humanities tutor also support the Extended Essay?

Yes. Economics, History, Psychology, and Global Politics are popular Extended Essay subjects, and our EE support follows the same rules: topic refinement, research planning, and feedback on student-written drafts, never writing. See our dedicated Extended Essay tutoring page for how that works.

Are IB humanities subjects easier than the sciences?

No subject group is inherently easier; the demands are different. These courses reward sustained analytical writing, evaluation, and applying theory to real cases, which many students find harder to improve alone than content-heavy revision. The skills are very coachable with structured practice on real assessment material.
